Telephone Interview Tips

Interview Questions

In our experience many initial interviews are now conducted by phone.   While most of the following points still apply there are also some other things to consider which are set out below.

In a telephone interview you have the disadvantage that it can be more difficult to develop a rapport with your interviewer and you can both feel more awkward.   Silences feel prolonged, but don't let this stop you from taking the time to think about your answers and responding clearly.   You do have the advantage that you can be fully prepared with draft responses to questions written out in front of you so you shouldn't forget anything!

There are some specific do's and don'ts we recommend you consider
DO
Go somewhere quiet where you will not be disturbed
Speak very clearly
Ask for clarification - remember you don't have the other person's body language to guide you on whether you may have said enough.   Give the answer you feel appropriate and ask if the interviewer wants more detail
Prepare as in any interview
Take notes - this is easier in a phone interview
Record your voice before hand and listen for faults.   Do you sound flat, is there enough modulation in your tone?   You may think you're giving an impression completely at odds with reality

DO NOT

Do not use a mobile phone - they are difficult to hear and frequently cut out
Do not conduct the interview in a public place.   Treat this interview as you would a face to face meeting.   Take the time out to treat it seriously.   If you don't why should a prospective employer or recruiter?
Do not mumble, laugh as you speak or swallow your words
